This new product is a pre-cooked and refrigerated (not frozen) entree, consisting a stacked enchilda with beef and black beans, and spanish style rice. It is a 1 lb 4 oz package which cooks for 3-4 minutes in a microwave. Theoretically it serves two (for nutritional purposes), and while the enchilada portion (like enchilada lasagne — a large square of stacked tortilla slices with layered filling, as opposed to a rolled and stuffed enchilada)is certainly adequate for two, the small portion of rice and beans is not adequate for two persons. We were *very* disappointed in this entree. It isn’t often I’m let down by a TJ’s meal. They are almost always good, and if not, then still slightly better than average when compared to your typical grocery store entrees. Not so with this entree, I’m afraid. The enchilada sauce is well and good, and the rice is not terrible, although a little wet, but the loose black beans pictured on the cover are not loose nor that black – they are more like refried and an uappetizing shade of grey from being pureed in advance. The biggest disappointment was the carne asada filling. It was several bites before I found a long piece of beef, and promptly spat it out — it was a hunk of gristle. When digging for other pieces of meat, which had been densly packed in the center of the stack instead of sprinkled throughout, it was tough, chewy, completely lacking in flavor and honestly, very unappetizing. This was the first time we pitched an entire tray of TJ’s food into the rubbish bin. While we hope we just got a rogue package which was subpar, we suspect this entree needs a bit more refining before anyone will put it on the “must have” list.
