French Onion Burgers

French onion soup is one of our absolute favorites. I think we’ve ordered it at every restaurant that has it on their menu. It always turns out best at home though. My only problem is that I never find it enough for a meal and can’t figure what else to serve with it. I thought I’d take all of the flavors from the soup and turn it into something more substantial… a burger! These are tasty. 1 medium onion, cut in half and sliced 1 tsp olive oil 1 pkg sliced mushrooms splash of white wine 1 lb ground beef 2 tsp TJ’s chopped garlic (in a jar) 1 T. fresh thyme leaves salt and pepper, as needed 4 TJ’s ciabatta rolls Gruyere cheese, cut into good sized slices Over medium heat, add olive oil and onions to a saute pan. Saute, stirring often and scraping up brown bits until you reach a nice caramel color, about 20 minutes. (add a splash of water if needed to loosen up the flavor stuck to the pan.) Transfer onions to a plate. In the same pan, over medium heat, add the mushrooms. Let them cook a little to get golden for extra flavor, add a splash of wine and scrape the bottom of the pan. Cook for an additional 5 minutes. Remove from heat and set aside. In a medium sized bowl; thoroughly combine beef, garlic, thyme, salt and pepper (to your own taste). Form into 4 patties. I like to make a ball of the meat and smash between two plates for an even thickness. Grill over medium to your desired doneness. Heat broiler. Place sliced cheese on top half of roll and broil until cheese is bubbly and starting to brown. Reheat onions and mushrooms divided side by side in the pan. Assemble burgers with your desired amount of onions and mushrooms and top with cheesy buns. Enjoy! http://cooktoplease.blogspot.com/
